It is a real head scratcher to me that the middle daughter turned 35. How can that be? Seriously, she was just a little girl. Where, oh where has time gone?
Being fit and and in fine health she is now also pregnant with their third child. Very pregnant. As in “Enough already, let’s get this party started!” Like due any day… I understood that she needed a comforting gift and opted to make a lightweight quilt that would be useful and comfy at her home in Hawai’i.
I know that her favorite color is green and she prefers fairly modern items that are comfortable but not stark or industrial. Thumbing through the spring 2013 issue of easy quilts made my design choices a snap. I had some lovely green Kona fabric and a Juggling Summer layer cake by Zen Chic for Moda. They looked great together and the Big Wheel pattern by Brigitte Heitland was perfect.
I had fun putting this quilt together. The colors and the design really appealed to me and I learned how to do raw edge applique’ with fusible web and clear thread. A bit of a learning curve but glad to put another technique in my arsenal of mad sewing skills. Of course, it would be too easy to just copy the pattern exactly, so I did choose some different fabric colors from the Juggling Summer line. I also opted to use a bright, modern print for the backing.
Big Wheel
I love your first quilt story, and really love this quilt – big wheel. I love the colors, placement, and how the dark background color ’round the edges bleeds out into the white; kind of a watercolor effect, very cool – striking and original!
