Happy Gotcha Day!

Rescue dogs are lucky!

Not because of all they had to endure to get where they are, but because they have two special days a year to celebrate. First is their birthday, if you are lucky enough to know it. The second is their Gotcha Date, which could be more important than the first, simply because this is when the good life begins!

My little fellow wasn’t properly vetted but I don’t think he was mistreated physically. He certainly wasn’t fed and watered regularly but he feels much less anxious about that now. Fortunately he isn’t trying to drink out of the toilet or dumpster dive in every garbage can anymore. But he still swipes every little thing that lands on the floor; good, bad or indifferent. That may never change. But he has adapted well, gained weight and is a very sweet boy. The family that had Charlie just wanted a pageant dress for their daughter more than they wanted him. For more about his journey into our lives read: The Tale of the Terrible Terriers.

Here is Charles Winston Fox in the car just minutes after we picked him up from the Wire Fox Terrier rescue in Iowa. Since he had never previously been groomed, they had to have him shaved so he had no beard at all.

Charlie was a skinny little thing when we first got him. We spent several days with my mom in Iowa and all got to know each other a bit better.

He has progressed nicely with his sparkling little personality and sweet disposition.

Charlie loves to chase bees and has paid the price for that

His fat little lip from a stinger

He hangs out in the kitchen and helps me cook (and waits for manna from heaven aka my countertop)

He loves to sit outside with us and enjoy the evening, but he has to have his own chair

And of course, he is a Steelers fan!

After a round of prednisone, he has filled out a bit too much….he is a cookie monster! But we are working on that.

He is an excellent traveller and loves to be in the car. So, we decided to take him back to Iowa with us this year while we visit with my mom. Together we have the opportunity to celebrate his first Gotcha Day!

We love you Charlie!

  1. Dear Charlie,
I can tell what a special boy you are by the way your non-fur-mom lights up when talking about you. She had a big empty place in her heart that you have filled nicely. Sorry you had to spend time with the wrong family first but I’m thrilled that you have now found the perfect home!

    Dear Becky,
I am a firm believer that rescue pets are a bigger blessing to the rescuer than the pet. So glad you have this little gem in your life and I hope your relationship lasts a long, long time.
    Love, kj
